A landmark deal struck in 2003 to remove Libya's nuclear weapons program may be the nail on the coffin for Muammar Qadhafi's 40-plus-year regime according to David Sanger of the New York Times.
With Qadhafi clinging to power as opposition forces gain traction the picture may have been starkly different says Sanger if Qadhafi retained the threat of nuclear weapons.
The article quoted former Bush Administration officials who said there would be no telling as to "how far the Libyan program would have progressed in the last eight years and that based on Qadhafi's behavior there would be 'no question' the dictator would have used the threat to stay in power.
However Sanger mentioned the success of the denuclearization efforts has a current downside in that Iran and North Korea 'may conclude that Mr. Qaddafi made a fatal error' and refuse to engage in similar denuclearization programs.
