Hundreds of journalists and media staff have camped in and outside New Zealand's earthquake-ravaged city of Christchurch gearing up to present the country's most urgent and heart-wrenching stories to their audience.
But only members of the press with proper credentials working for reputable organizations were granted access to the press camp‚ located near the city's main square as all of the roads leading to it were cordoned off by the military.
The main press camp at Art Gallery in the center of downtown Christchuch was filled with media equipment while on the other side rescue teams occupied the entire building to review their plans before being dispatched to the field.
The New Zealand government held briefings twice a day to provide updates on the rescue operations.
There was an atmosphere of fierce but invisible competition as major media‚ including the BBC‚ ABC and others‚ were all racing to deliver engaging‚ up-to-the-minute new on this tragic situation to their audiences as fast as they could.

7 Network Australia] " It's always very competitive‚ especially when it comes to stories like this. We have been running our own race really and doing our own thing outside the city center‚ so haven't witnessed too much of that."
However‚ the overall atmosphere at the camp was very cooperative as the restricted area where rescue operations are still going on required active cooperation and sensible manners on the part of the journalists.

One News] "I think there is quite a bit of cooperation between media. We have relationships with a number of foreign reporters and organizations. And we do things like sharing links‚ and we provide materials for our partners."
Meanwhile‚ the government confirmed Saturday that it expects the death toll to rise sharply.
