South Korea's Unification Minister Hyun In-taek claims the North Korean regime will try to guard its citizens from the pro-democracy movement spreading across the Middle East.
In an interview with Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday‚ Minister Hyun said the authorities in Pyeongyang are most likely aware of the pro-democracy movement that has toppled the Hosni Mubarak regime in Egypt and is now threatening the dictatorship in Libya.
Hyun also said the North Korean leadership will make efforts to protect the Kim Jong-il regime and prevent similar mass uprisings.
However‚ as the communist regime has a tight grip on internet access‚ the minister added that the general North Korean population is probably unaware of the turbulent situation in the Middle East and North Africa‚ concluding that the impact of the unrest in the Arab world will be limited.
On a separate note‚ Minister Hyun commented that sending aid to the North should be divided into two categories- humanitarian and political- and as soon as Pyeongyang makes the distribution process transparent‚ he believes humanitarian aid could be delivered.
Meanwhile‚ a North Korean defector now heading a Seoul-based NGO‚ Kim Heung-kwang‚ also said on Wednesday that his group has been sending USB memory sticks that contain information about democracy and Korean television programs to the North.
Kim hopes the spread of these specially modified USB memory sticks‚ which hide content and files for a set period of time in order to pass inspection by authorities‚ will inform the people in the North about the recent pro-democracy movements among Arab nations.
