Welcome back.
When you are traveling in another country‚ it is more than natural to visit the national museum‚ where it holds thousands of cultural artifacts to find more about the country's roots and origins.
Cultural artifacts are a reflection of who we are as humanity and most importantly‚ they constantly connect us with the lost times of history
Every artifact has its own story and not only do they tell us of the pastthey also remind us of the wisdom of our ancestors.
And to remind us of how important it is to preserve such relics‚ Arirang Today's Park Hee-ju joins us now in the studio.
[Reporter : ] Hi guys. Korea is especially sensitive when it comes to this kind of a topic‚ as it suffers from a dramatic history where foreign powers looted some of our cultural assets and terrible accidents such as Sungnyemun catching fire back in 2008. Lacking in such valuable assets can cause serious social issues‚ and such items need to be in the best shape for the future generations to enjoy and appreciate our history and culture. I visited the National Museum of Korea‚ where experts were busy workingto fulfil this goal. Let's take a look.
A museum is said to be the measure of a country's cultural heritage.
It's also where history is redefined through the displays of ancient artifacts.
They not only represent a country's past‚ but also reminds of the wisdom and traditions of our ancestors. That is why they are in constant need of expert hands to help keep them intact for generations to come.
[Interview : Kim Jin-sol‚ Visitor] "I am amazed at how well they have preserved such old artifacts."

[Interview : Ruth Urben‚ Visitor] "It fascinates me seeing culture and seeing how cultures compare with different countries and regions of the world. So I very much appreciate that. And then I think of what went into actually preserving these artifacts‚ and the display‚ all the special skills"

One has to walk past the huge storage room‚ and go through three heavy steel doors to get to a corridor lined with 20-something restoration workrooms.
Different types of artifacts designated as national treasures‚ such as paintings‚ writings‚ ceramics‚ and metalwork‚ are restored here.
This so-called "hospital for cultural assets" is located in the National Museum of Korea.

[Interview : ] "I am currently working on restoring the destroyed parts of an old piece of document."
In this room‚ researchers work on restoring the damaged‚ fragile pieces of paper artifacts‚ such as paintings and calligraphic works.
[Interview : Jang Yeon-hui‚ Researcher] "Conservation room for paintings and writings First off‚ we find a piece of paper that is the most similar to that of the original document. Then we dye the paper to make it look like the original‚ and use it to restore the destroyed parts."
The task is extremely difficult and requires immense concentration‚ for the researchers must restore the faded and defaced parts to their original state manually.
[Interview : Jang Yeon-hui‚ Researcher] "Conservation room for paintings and writings It's a very delicate work. Even a tiny mishap with the tweezers can snag or even rip the paper. So we normally don't talk when we are working."
Due to the high level of difficulty of restoring this type of artifacts‚ at least 10 years of experience are needed. When restoring portraits‚ Buddha portraits‚ and old maps‚ the key is to conceal the traces of restoration.
[Interview : ] "There are many materials involved in our work‚ such as metalware‚ earthenware‚ and paintings and calligraphic works. Therefore‚ we need to have a vast knowledge of these materials and their theories‚ and also‚ it is very important to have skillful hands at dealing with these cultural ar
