President Lee Myung-bak met with the presidential envoy from Indonesia and his 50-member delegation at the Presidential Office Wednesday morning to exchange views on boosting economic cooperation.
During the talks Hatta Rajasa‚ the coordinating minister for economic affairs‚ delivered a letter from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to President Lee‚ conveying his wish to have Korea take an active role in Indonesia's economic development master plan.
The blueprint outlines development goals from 2011 to 2025 and will be officially announced by the government in March.
President Lee expressed appreciation for the request and stressed that for the economic plan to be successful the expansion of investment by Korean firms‚ the sharing of development experience and the signing of a FTA with Indonesia are needed.
He also expressed enthusiasm for the two countries' drive for collaboration in the comprehensive defense industry.
Seoul and Jakarta have agreed to improve military exchanges and cooperation in the defense procurement sector.
The three-day visit by the delegation‚ which consists of ministerial and government officials as well as business leaders‚ follows a bilateral summit between the Korean leader and his Indonesian counterpart in Bali late last year.
There the Indonesian leader asked Korea to work as a "main partner" in its mid- to long-term economic development program.
