South Korea and the United States will conduct annual joint military exercises on the Korean peninsula later this month that are focused on defending South Korea from possible enemy attacks.
Korea-US Combined Forces Command in Seoul said Tuesday that the annual Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises will be carried out through mid-March with about 12-thousand 800 US soldiers taking part.
Although military officials have refused to confirm the size and details of this year's drill some local news papers are suggesting that a US supercarrier may take part.
Seoul's Defense Ministry said‚ however‚ that this year's exercises will be focused on defending the South from potential provocative acts from North Korea.
The ministry added that during the drill the two allies will also prepare for all possible scenarios‚ including an all-out war.
Key Resolve is a command-post drill using computer-based simulations while Foal Eagle is focused on field exercises.
Pyeongyang has criticized the drill calling it a rehearsal for a nuclear war against it.
