Finance Minister Yoon Jeung-hyun suggested that the ASEAN+3 countries should expand its regional financial safety net‚ the Chiang Mai Initiative Multi-lateralization‚ or CMIM‚ in order to properly deal with a financial crisis in the region.
During his welcoming remarks at the Conference for Future Vision of ASEAN+3 Financial Cooperation in Seoul on Friday‚ Yoon pointed out that the excessive inflow of capital from outside the region carries a risk of volatility.
So‚ Yoon addressed economic policymakers from the 13 member countries that the CMIM should be more than doubled to over 240 billion US dollars.
It was first established last March with a volume of 120 billion dollars.
Korea's finance minister also raised the question of whether the current international monetary system‚ using a particular currency as a reserve‚ can remain sustainable.
He said that there are many experts criticizing the current system as it repeatedly brings financial turmoil‚ imposes exorbitant prices for crisis prevention and aggravates global imbalance through competitive accumulation of foreign reserves.
Yoon wrapped up his speech by emphasizing the need to strengthen coordination of regional macro-economic policies amid declining national borders in the 21st century.
