NATO says it will start to hand over security responsibility in Afghanistan to Afghan forces later in the first half of this year after it announces a plan next month.
The transition would go district by district‚ giving Afghan forces full responsibility for the country's security by 2014 and allow foreign troops to gradually pull out.
NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday that the date in March would be when the first districts and provinces to make the transition would be announced‚ not the actual start of the handover.
He said‚ in his view‚ that would begin in the first half of 2011.
