This Asian grocery store in New York sells a wide array of Korean products attracting Korean‚ Chinese and Japanese shoppers.
This packet of red chilli pepper powder says it is a product of Korea.
Although the barcode begins with 880 which means it came from Korea the actual country of origin is not printed on the packaging.
Some products that claim to be made in Korea are sold at less than half the price of other comparable Korean products which raise doubts about whether the ingredients are genuinely of Korean origin.
[Interview : Yang Hye-sook‚ Korean expatriate] "I don't think it's purely from Korea. I think there is some Chinese chilli powder mixed in with it."
[Interview : Kim Min-young‚ Korean expatriate] "The quality doesn't meet the brand's standards so I don't think it's actually from Korea."
Meanwhile‚ some Chinese products are blatantly being marketed as Korean products.
When compared side-by-side‚ these packets of frozen hairtail are strikingly similar.
But one is a product of Korea‚ while the other came from China.
[Interview : Kim Bong-jun‚ New York state attorney] "All imports to America‚ with a few exceptions‚ must clearly state the country of origin. If labeled incorrectly‚ fines up to 100-thousand dollars or 1-thousand dollars per case can be levied. Offenders could even face a one-year term in prison."
However‚ because of the lack of enforcement‚ deceptively labeled products continue to dominate grocery store aisles.
