Korean President Lee Myung-bak on his second day in Brussels‚ Belgium attended the opening of the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting Monday evening‚ local time.
During his opening remarks at the biennial gathering under the theme of "Quality of Life" President Lee stated that both Asia and Europe have the challenging task of simultaneously achieving economic growth along with greater well-being and dignity for all citizens.
He stressed the significance of the two continents working closely to achieve a win-win situation within the framework of the ASEM to realize good governance ultimately helping them to improve the quality of life globally.
"유럽과 아시아의 차이와 공동의 과제를 잘 조화시키는 거버넌스가 필요하며‚ 이를 통해 세계는 좀 더 역동적이고 공정한 지구촌이 될수 있을 겁니다."

] "The two continents should try to consumate good governanace by harmoniously dealing with common tasks as well as differences. Through this kind of effort‚ we will bring about a more dynamic and equitable global village."
Lee also used his speech to call on the international community for support on Seoul's hosting of a G20 summit by introducing the agenda items and his vision for it.
Earlier in the day President Lee held a series of bilateral summits with Japan and Australia to discuss bilateral relations and geopolitical issues involving North Korea.
Lee and his Japanese counterpart Naoto Kan agreed to make efforts to commit to "a 1-hundred-year bright and future-oriented relationship."
President Lee said it is time the two nations take action following Kan's statement made in August in which he offered an apology to Korea for its colonial rule such as a return of books or documents taken during its colonization of Korea.
The Korean leader also held his first one-on-one with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard who took office in June and extended his congratulations on Australia's joining of the ASEM as a new member alongside New Zealand and Russia.
