요약정보
Contemporary art and dance are the central themes of this year's New Wave Festival.
Headed by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture organizers say the goal this year is to put on one-of-a-kind stage performances that combine media‚ dance‚ poetry‚ music and even shamanistic rituals.
The first dance show held at Wonder Space in Hyehwa was based on keeping Korean traditions alive.
By juxtaposing modern dance with Korean folk music and video art the choreographer said she set out to portray the beauty of Korea's traditional culture with a focus on minimalism.
[Interview : Jeon In-jung‚ Choreographer
Blue Elephant Dance Company] "I am finding that a lot of Korean artists are being greatly influenced by things happening in Europe and North America. And as a result‚ we are losing many aspects that are unique to Asia‚ including our philosophies. This is why I purposely chose clothes that are simple and reminiscent of Korea's traditional style."
The audience said they were taken aback to see such an odd combination of genres blend so well together on stage.
[Interview : Kim Jung-soo‚ Audience member] "After tonight's performance I realized that our modern dance and traditional folk music are sufficient to go global. And I really didn't expect this show to be so great. I was pleasantly surprised."
Another experimental performance that combines video art with modern dance and installation art was held at Mullae Art Factory on Wednesday.
Featuring renowned Chilean physical theatre artist‚ Elias Cohen the show attempted to explore the deeper meaning behind facial expressions by projecting video clips of various faces onto large inflated plastic bags.
According to the director she purposely used items such as plastic bags and other types of carriers on stage in order to spotlight all the minute expressions that often go unnoticed by people when interacting with each other.
[Interview : Woo Doo-hwa‚ Audience member] "I enjoyed it so much. The way they mixed performance art with media and other types of art forms was very impressive."
And because all of these performances are held in small venues where the audience can interact with the performers on stage many said they especially enjoyed the intimate nature of the experience.
