Fans at the California 200 an off-road race in the Mojave Desert watched in horror on Sunday as a driver rolled his truck into a crowd of spectators killing eight people and injuring twelve others.
Witnesses say the driver took a jump at high speed hit the brakes upon landing and rolled the truck sideways into the crowd.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management the organizer of the race had agreed that vehicles would slow to less than 25 kilometers-per-hour when passing within 15 meters of fans however observers said the crowd could almost touch the trucks as they passed by.
Fans said such races rarely have any safety guards between the trucks and spectators and there were none at the site of Sunday's deadly accident.
