World automakers are in the midst of an American auto storm which many are calling a "vehicle recall tsunami".
This year alone there have been roughly 15 million vehicles recalled including models from the top three Japanese carmakers.
Among those the largest fallen giant is Toyota as it pulled a staggering 10 million vehicles off the road.
The company has suffered a loss of credibility and its corporate heads now face a US Senate hearing over safety issues.
However‚ Toyota is not the only one with its pedal stuck in the mud as Honda announced it will recall 6-hundred-50-thousand units because of faulty air-bags and window switches after a child died in a car fire in 2009.
General Motors also recalled 1.3 million Pontiac Vibes and Chevrolet Cobalts in order to replace a part in its power steering system which has been linked to 14 crashes and one injury.
So‚ what's causing all of these sudden recalls[Interview : George Magliano‚ Director
Automotive Research for North America] "I did not expect the recall‚ but I am not surprised by it. This is the way of the future. This is the industry and the way in which the market is going to go. It has been that way for quite a while. Recalls are going to be more prevalent‚ Recalls are going to be bigger."
Auto industry experts say that a manufacturer's cost-cutting policy also contributes to massive recalls across the world.
[Interview : George Magliano‚ Director
Automotive Research for North America] "Not just the complexity‚ but the way the cars are assembled now. The manufacturer or part supplier often puts in a whole system; the wheels‚ interior. The parts are common across all models. OK‚ so you have a problem in the United Sates and it can effect cars sold in Europe or Asia."
As tensions heighten over vehicle safety Ford managed to come out on top taking the lead against US rival General Motors with a 43 percent increase in February sales and a market share of more than 18-percent while Toyota slipped from second to third.
