The South Korean government plans to increase humanitarian aid to impoverished North Korea via international bodies and non-governmental organizations.
Seoul's Unification Ministry announced that it will send some 13-million US dollars to the World Health Organization and nearly 4-million to the United Nations Children's Fund‚ UNICEF‚ to support malnourished children and improve public health care facilities in the North.
The ministry also added that more than 5-million dollars will be used to fund local civic organizations so that they can provide aid to infants and pregnant women there.
Observers say the move is aimed at stepping up efforts to improve stalled inter-Korean ties next year.
