요약정보
Leaders of South Korea and Japan spent a lot of time discussing regional issues and North Korea-related matters on Friday.
In a joint press conference after their one-on-one and extended summits‚ President Lee Myung-bak and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama supported each other's views on the future of Northeast Asia and North Korea's nuclear saga.
First‚ President Lee expressed support for the idea of grouping countries in the East Asian region pitched by the Japanese leader in the United States last month.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "I think the world is already being grouped by regions. If we tried‚ I do not think it is impossible for East Asia to do it. I think positively of the idea."
노력하게 되면 세계가 다 그렇게 되는데 동아시아만 불가능하다고 생각하지 않는다. 저는 긍정적으로 생각을 한다.)
The plan‚ in the long run‚ aims to establish an Asian common currency and permanent regional security.
And in line with securing peace and stability in the region‚ North Korean affairs certainly topped the agenda at the Seoul-Tokyo summit.
The two leaders agreed on the principle of the "grand bargain" proposal suggested by the South Korean leader during his visit to the US last month.
[Interview : Yukio Hatoyama‚ Japanese Prime Minister] "I believe the grand bargain proposal‚ the comprehensive agreement‚ that President Lee Myung-bak is suggesting is very accurate and the right way."
President Lee spoke of the need to come up with a comprehensive proposal for Pyeongyang to resolve its nuclear issue in a single step.
To that end‚ the focal point of Hatoyama's stance was that the issue of the Japanese citizens kidnapped by the North during the 1970s and 80s should be included in the grand bargain proposal‚ a point to which President Lee agreed.
Ways to expand cultural exchanges and boost economic cooperation were also on the table.
Now‚ the two leaders are scheduled to separately fly out to China later on Friday for a trilateral summit on Saturday.
This was the new Japanese leader's first official overseas travel aimed at bilateral talks and observers say the fact that he chose Korea for such a trip underlines his emphasis on a future-oriented relationship with Korea.
