Nearly 500 leaders from Korean communities across the globe gathered in Seoul on Tuesday for "the World Korean Community Leaders Convention."
President Lee Myung-bak welcomed the visiting overseas Koreans and called for their strengthening ties with the motherland.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "We can achieve great benefits in global networking. Seven million brethren have advanced in every field. If overseas Koreans and the country network together systematically‚ it will help you while also supporting the nation. This meeting convenes once a year and I hope it becomes a more meaningful gathering to establish cooperative relationships that this era needs."
Over four days in the capital and the city of Jecheon in North Chungcheong Province‚ representatives of overseas Koreans from 66 countries will mainly focus on issues related to their participation in Korean elections.
Following the National Assembly's granting of voting rights to Korean nationals living abroad in February‚ they will be allowed to vote for lawmaker and presidential elections.
It will come as early as 2012 for national elections.
Votes from overseas could amount to around 2.4 million.
This is more than 6 percent of the nation's 37.8 million registered voters.
During the conference‚ the National Election Commission is scheduled to hold a session on voting procedures‚ but the visiting representatives have some difficult issues to resolve during their stay.

해외참정권 문제는 많은 우려가 있음에도 불구하고 이번에 도입하면서 앞으로 준비기간이 3년 있으니까 우리가 충분히 국복할 수 있는 문제라고생각이 됩니다.
Participants say that they also need to disscuss how candidates will hold rallies for voters living overseas and how to regulate possible illegal election campaigns taking place outside Korean jurisdiction among other issues.
With the delegates representing overseas Koreans‚ political parties also plan to court these potential overseas voters with forums during the conference to explain their policies.
