요약정보
Hundreds of Hanwang residents in Sichuan province gathered around a clock tower where the hands stopped at exactly 2:28 p.m.
That is when an earthquake struck China's southern region one year ago on May 12th.
More than 86-thousand people have either perished or are listed as still missing after a quake with a magnitude of 8.0 demolished virtually everything in its wake.
Among the dead are more than 5‚300 students.
A year later on Tuesday at 2:28 p.m. cities and towns across China uniformly sounded a siren for a nationwide moment of silence to pay tribute to the victims.
The reconstruction of buildings and roads in Sichuan province is said to be nearly complete but the emotional devastation left by the natural disaster is still in tatters.
[Interview : Mother who lost a son] "I thought about my son every day during the last year. I cannot do anything else."
"지난 1년을 매일 아들 생각만 했어요. 다른 일은 아무 것도 할 수 없어요."
[Interview : Earthquake survivor] "My house was demolished. I was not able to salvage anything."
"지진으로 집이 완전히 부숴졌어요. 아무 것도 건진게 없어요."
On Monday‚ the eve of the 1-year anniversary of China's worst-ever quake‚ President Hu Jintao invited foreign ambassadors representing 27 countries‚ including Korea‚ to Chengdu‚ the capital of Sichuan province‚ and thanked their governments for helping out with disaster relief.
A report indicates the Chinese government has‚ so far‚ spent close to 58-billion US dollars on post-quake reconstruction projects and that it plans to complete them by late next year.
Without citing the cause officials in Sichuan say the pace at which homes are being rebuilt is faster in rural areas than in the cities.
Over 240-thousand rural houses compared to about 100-thousand apartment units are reportedly under construction.
