요약정보
With North Korea's purported satellite rocket launch looming the United States government's sudden shift from it previous rule of engagement on Pyeongyang's imminent ballistic missile threat has some experts baffled.
Last month‚ US Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned that if Pyeongyang pushes ahead with preparations to fire a long-range missile the US will intercept it by using an anti-missile defense system.
Secretary Gates now says the US has no plans to shoot down the North Korean missile unless its trajectory includes US territory‚ which he doubts is possible given that the communist country's ballistic missile technology is not as sophisticated as widely speculated.
Washington's water-downed threat assessment of North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missiles is thought to have come after US officials carefully reviewed intelligence reports and weighed all the diplomatic ramifications.
Some experts on North Korea believe the US could face criticism from the international community if it shoots down a harmless satellite launching vehicle as claimed by Pyeongyang.
Whether North Korea launches a rocket or a missile if the US intercepts it this could provide the North with more political leverage or metaphorically speaking more ammunition to attack Washington's hard-line policy on Pyeongyang.
Last week‚ North Korea threatened to boycott the six-party nuclear talks if the United Nations imposes security sanctions on Pyeongyang in the aftermath of the satellite launch which it says is a sovereign right.
North Korea's long-time Cold War allies China and Russia are reportedly disconcerted by Washington's interception initiative and some experts predict the two countries who are permanent members of the UN Security Council may not be so supportive of US-led sanctions against the reclusive state.
The reliability of the US missile defense system against a North Korean ICBM is also being called into question.
The US attests to its anti-missile system's dependability but a failure to intercept a North Korean missile could seriously jeopardize its viability not to mention prove to become a huge embarrassment.
