President Lee Myung-bak has indicated that he opposes responding militarily to a missile launch by North Korea.
In an interview published in Monday's edition of the Financial Times the South Korean leader also voiced understanding of Japan's "intention to shoot down anything that flies out of Korea."
This‚ as the Japanese government has the responsibility of protecting its citizens from the object which will travel through Japan's airspace and could fall into its territorial waters.
President Lee pointed out that pushing ahead with the launch might be beneficial to North Korea in gaining short-term leverage but would not be in its best interest in the long-term.
These remarks come amid signs the communist state is preparing a rocket for liftoff from its east coast possibly later this week.
Asked why Seoul was not turning up the pressure on Pyeongyang by closing down the Gaeseong Industrial Complex‚ for example‚ the president said he did not see the benefit in taking such an extreme measure.
He explained that his government was not considering such a move at this point because the inter-Korean industrial estate is a way to keep the window of dialogue open with Pyeongyang.
President Lee did‚ however‚ warn that if North Korea continues to take such extreme positions and actions the South will have to tailor its responses and actions.
In the interview‚ which focused heavily on North Korea‚ President Lee also stressed that the goal was peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula but that he did not foresee it happening in the near future.
