요약정보
12-year-old Kim Yong-june is like any typical Korean fifth-grader who wakes up each morning to go to school.
But his 50-minute bus ride to school is quite a bit different.
Yong-june has to go through three security check points and a head count before he can even step onto school grounds.
Why[Reporter : reporter: 김석] "US soldiers from the nearby United Nations Command Joint Security Area come here twice a week to teach English to these students. The volunteer teachers use a variety of teaching tools including cooking‚ arts and crafts and physical education."
And the students and soldiers are making the most of this special opportunity.
[Interview : Kim Yong-june‚ 5th grader
Daesungdong Elementary School ] "I can play soccer and play card games with my English soldiers. And I can practice English with my friends. That is a good point for me."
[Interview : Jamey Williams‚ Specialist
United Nations Command‚ JSA
] "This is a very good program. I enjoy myself very much. And as you can see we are having loads of fun. And the kids know more English than I anticipated."
The school was not always bustling with student enthusiasm.
Just last year‚ it almost closed down as it was left with only six students after three graduated.
But with the school administration's determination and hard work‚ the school was able to launch the US soldier English program that became an instant hit.
Currently‚ the school is at maximum enrollment‚ but it has ambitious plans for the future.
[Interview : Kim Duk-won‚ Principal
Daesungdong Elementary School
] "The current enrollment is limited to 30 students with about five students per grade. To increase the effectiveness of education and benefit from a bigger interaction among students our goal is to expand enrollment to 60."
The school currently has a waiting list of 17 students from neighboring towns wanting to enroll.
Perhaps it's only a matter of time that this one-of-a-kind school becomes the first elementary school in Korea to administer entrance exams to hand-pick students.
