Korea will begin free trade negotiations with New Zealand and Australia. The Presidential Office announced Wednesday that President Lee Myung-bak will visit the two countries‚ and Indonesia in the first week of March.
The top office says in New Zealand and Australia President Lee will officially announce the launching of bilateral free trade talks. On top of the FTA a key goal for President Lee during his state visits will be gaining support for Korea's green growth initiatives through bilateral collaborations.
With New Zealand Prime Minister John Key President Lee will discuss cooperation in the area of sustainable energy. While meeting with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd the Korean president will touch on carbon gas reduction and the possibility of joint research on climate change.
In Jakarta the top office says the Korea-Indonesia summit is likely to conclude with an agreement on expanding joint forestry projects in Indonesia. The deal if reached would increase the size of Indonesian land under leasing contracts with Korean firms from 500‚000 hectares to 700‚000. This is roughly four times the size of Jeju Island. An official from the Korea Forest Service told Arirang News that with the deal Korean companies will be able to grow and harvest trees for use as fuel for thermal power plants.
The Presidential Office says the trips to Australia and Indonesia will also provide opportunities to coordinate Korea's stance with those nations' before the Group of 20 economic summit to be held in London in April.
