Bowing to Buddhist dieties three times before writing each sutra and pouring perfume on the mulberry trees from which the paper is made
This is how much effort Korean Buddhist worshippers of the past put into the copying of sutras in their quest for enlightenment.
Sutra-copying flourished during the Goryeo era from the 9th through 14th centuries.
It came back to life thanks to Oegil Kim Gyeongho who has been studying and practicing the art for more than 35 years.
Fitting five straight lines in a 1mm square space and faithfully reproducing every character Kim says requires careful preparation of materials including melting deer horns into gelatin for the ink and coating indigo mulberry paper with ox-hide starch.
Only endless practice and keen concentration can bring this level of craftsmanship.
[Interview : Kim Gyeongho‚ Sutra artist] "When there is peace in my mind and my eyes are focused‚ the 1mm space widens and I reach a point where I can accurately place the brush at the exact spot in less than five seconds before the ink dries up. To do that‚ I avoid going out so that I don't break the concentration flow. There were times when I spent as much as a week gaining my inner peace to draw the eyes and nose of the Buddha in a 3mm space‚ for even a single mistake means the ruin of an entire project."
47-year-old Kim spends at least five to eight months on a single sutra work.
He has lost most of his molar teeth and says he knows it's the painstaking work that causes his teeth to fall out.
But Kim says what really bothers him is the lack of appreciation and knowledge of sutra-copying in modern times.
[Interview : Kim Gyeongho‚ Sutra artist] "Among the Asian countries‚ I can say for sure‚ sutra-copying is the most exceptional of the Buddhist arts‚ but it's distressing to know that this is being ignored. I already feel my eyesight faltering‚ and it's getting harder for me to concentrate for a long period of time. In other words‚ I really only have a couple of more years to complete highly densified pieces‚ and it will be impossible for me to do what I can do now in the near future. I hope a proper system of study can be implemented to open the door to the little-known world of sutra painting so it can be preserved as one of the world's best cultural treasures."
