Distinguished leaders from 15 different countries were invited to congratulate Korea on the past 60 years of the republic and assess what lies ahead.
Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade hosted the forum and President Lee Myung-bak opened the gathering.
[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "The Republic of Korea is now getting ready for the next 60 years. Korea will be reunited and will become a global country based on trust and law."
[Reporter : Kim Nari narikim@arirang.co.kr] "The forum includes three sessions that start with discussions on the ways to promote peace and stability on the Korean peninsula followed by the ways to overcome the global financial crisis and finally‚ how to achieve green growth."
Former US Secretary of Defense William Cohen praised Korea's achievements but said North Korea is still suffering from poverty and aid should be continued.
During the break Mr. Cohen said Korea-US security relations will remain the same after the US presidential election.
[Interview : William Sebastian Cohen Former US Secretary of Defense] "Regardless who is elected‚ whether it is President Obama or President McCain‚ the security relationship will remain the same. The United States recognizes that stability and security for South Korea and the entire peninsula has a regional impact."
Former British Prime Minister John Major shared his hopes of a peaceful reunification of the two Koreas but showed concern over economic pressures on the South should that happen.
[Interview : John Major Former UK Prime Minister] "Based on the achievements of the last 60 years it is all possible and I for one have the confidence that Korea will be able to continue it to improve both has status in the world and the lifestyle of her own citizen in the South and their neighbors in the North."
Alan Heeger a Nobel Prize laureate in chemistry emphasized the importance of renewable energy and showed his expectations for Korea's role in improving environment.
[Interview : Dr. Alan Heeger Nobel laureate] "Korea has demonstrated in the past‚ the remarkable abilty to take technology and use it to create product. This is what we need in the area of renewable energy. "
Economics laureate Robert Mundell said there should be more discipline over international reserves in order to overcome the financial crisis and shared his thoughts on how long it will go on.
[Interview : Dr. Robert Mundell Nobel laureate] "I think it will last turmoil for another few months but US economy is gradually recovering and I think that I am rather getting to be optimistic about its recovery."
President Lee also touched on the crisis saying the won-dollar swap agreement settled Thursday is an example of international collaboration toward economic revival.
