Regardless of the controversy:
Dokdo has become a popular tourist destination since the islets were opened to public three years ago.
It's a difficult trip there and tourists are only allowed on Dokdo for minutes but they keep coming back.
Our Kim Bumsoo joined the Dokdo crowd for this report.
During the summer vacation season Ulleung Island in Korea's East Sea is crowded with tourists.
The island's natural setting attracts plenty of tourists with many of them also visiting the Dokdo Museum‚ which is on Ulleung and taking a boat ride to Dokdo itself.
[INTERVIEW : Yoo Seungjae‚ Museum visitor] ''We are going to Dokdo for my nephew's school vacation projects. We came here to learn about Dokdo before going there tomorrow.''
More than one million people so far have visited the museum‚ which displays Korean and Japanese maps from the 15th to 20th centuries‚ describing Dokdo as Korean territory‚ as well as exhibits on the islets' ecosystem.
After visiting the museum tourists line up for ferries headed to the Dokdo islets.
[REPORTER : kimbumsoo@arirang.co.kr] ''From July to early August more than 15-hundred people per day visit the Dokdo Islets. That's more than 100-thousand tourists last year.''
Public demand for Dokdo tours has been on the rise in the last three years.
[INTERVIEW : Choi Yihwan‚ Culture & Tour Dept.‚Ulleung County] ''Dokdo tours became open to the public in March 2005. Dokdo is Korea's easternmost land‚ and the beauty of its natural environment is as great as that of Ulleung Island. During the peak season‚ three ships run to the islets four times a day.''
However sailing to Dokdo is not easy.
Many tourists experience motion sickness during the hour-and-a-half ride in the rough sea.
And there is less than a 60-percent chance of actually anchoring the ship alongside the Dokdo pier due to strong waves and winds.
Even when successfully moored‚ only 30-minute stays are allowed for tourists.
But as Dokdo becomes visible from the deck‚ nausea changes to joy.
The government has turned Dokdo into a maritime outpost but also protects the environment as an official nature reserve.
Black-tailed gulls and storm petrels inhabit the cliffs among 22 kinds of fowl.
''I only saw it on television before‚ but when I saw it‚ it was really good.''
[INTERVIEW : Park Eungeun‚ Tourist] ''Because of its easternmost position‚ and because it is Korea's island‚ I visited to have a good experience with my baby.''
Ulleung County is currently working on plans to build a sea wall at the Dokdo pier so more people can access Korea's easternmost land.
