It's all just starting for President Lee Myungbak‚ but for former President Roh Moohyun today marked his return as an ordinary citizen.
From the inauguration ceremony‚ Mr. Roh and the former First Lady travelled to a small town in the country's southeast where supporters gave them a warm homecoming.
Yoo Jihae has more.
After attending President Lee Myungbak's inauguration Monday and bidding supporters farewell‚ former President Roh Moohyun and his wife did what came naturally: they headed home.
The couple traveled by a combination of car and train to Mr. Roh's birthplace in the city of Gimhae‚ some five hours south of Seoul‚ where a red carpet treatment greeted the Rohs' return after 32 years away.
More than three thousand people had flocked to Bongha Village‚ and hundreds of posters accompanied by waves of yellow balloons decorated the rough roads‚ some of them with warm words of greeting and many of them touting Roh's political legacies.
A full-fledged ceremony of performances and concerts‚ including a fusion of Western classical and Korean traditional music was held to boost the festive atmosphere and some 600 police were stationed to beef up security.
Speaking briefly‚ Roh expressed his utmost gratitude to the people and reiterated the importance of national unity.
Many locals were proud to welcome the 61-year-old liberal for he is the first Korean president to return home distancing himself from politics.
Other former presidents chose to stay in the capital‚ maintaining attachments to future political ambitions.
However‚ judging from his recent comments regarding plans to spend 30 more years with the party‚ many cast doubt on his sincerity about retirement.
And with ongoing criticism over his extravagant spending of 46 billion won‚ roughly 49 million U.S. dollars' worth of taxpayers' money to remodel Bongha and vicinity into a sacred place for "Roh Lovers"‚ whether the former president makes a quiet and peaceful exit‚ only time will tell.
