요약정보
Koreans around the country have witnessed the launch of a new era.
Lee Myungbak took the oath of office for a five-year term on this Monday morning‚ promising to advance the nation.
Sung Taekyung reports.
Lee Myungbak was sworn in as Korea's new president on Monday‚ taking the oath of office in an inauguration ceremony held outside the National Assembly building in central Seoul.
President Lee Myungbak: "I have received your call and today‚ I stand here before you as the 17th-term President of the Republic of Korea. To a nation that I am immensely proud of and to its great people‚ I offer my most solemn respect. I sincerely pledge to you that I will dedicate my body and soul to this historic mission of the time."
A former Seoul mayor and once-CEO of Hyundai Construction Company‚ the new Korean leader noted the country's economic revival as his most urgent task.
Lee also vowed to bolster ties with the United States and presented hope for the future of inter-Korean relations.
President Lee Myungbak: "Once North Korea abandons its nuclear program and chooses the path to openness‚ we can expect to see a new horizon in inter-Korean cooperation. Along with the international community‚ we will provide assistance so that we can raise the per capita income of North Korea to three thousand dollars within 10 years."
Despite near-freezing temperatures‚ tens of thousands gathered outside the parliament building to witness the inauguration of President Lee‚ who won the December election by the largest margin in Korean election history.
Reporter Sung Taekyung: "From sports stars to street cleaners‚ about 50-thousand people attended the inauguration ceremony. The event also saw the largest number of foreign dignitaries‚ including Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice."
Also among the 180 foreign delegates on hand to congratulate him were Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and Russian Prime Minister Victor Zubkov.
The transfer of power to the conservatives comes after a decade of liberal rule whose policies‚ critics say‚ held back economic growth.
And so‚ Koreans have high hopes for their new president in the next five years.
Hopes to see annual economic growth of seven percent‚ of per capita income doubling to 40-thousand U.S. dollars‚ and their country becoming one of the world's top seven economies‚ just the way their new president promised them.
