요약정보
President-elect Lee Myungbak's transition committee is looking to streamline the government by consolidating the functions of some ministries.
Now‚ one of the agencies up for possible closure is the Unification Ministry dealing specifically with North Korea affairs.
Officials from the ministry briefed members of the transition team on this Monday‚ stressing why the incoming government should keep things as they are.
Ahn Jisu has details.
Following the Unification Ministry's briefing early Monday President-elect Lee Myungbak's transition team has announced major changes to how that key ministry is will be run.
High on the list of changes is its dealings with North Korea.
While the focus of the ministry has been on maintaining peace and reducing tensions on the Korean peninsula‚ transition team spokesman Lee Dongkwan said that under the incoming administration‚ its goal will be the North's nuclear disarmament.
He added that even as the South continues providing humanitarian aid to the North‚ the basis for some key cross-border economic projects will get a fresh look.
The spokesman also stressed that the a proposed international cooperation fund designed to promote Pyeongyang's economic growth will depend on the communist regime's forward progress on nuclear disarmament and that the funds need to be used transparently and efficiently.
Following Friday's announcement by the transition team that some of the Unification Ministry's functions could be merged with the Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry speculation was rife that the Unification Ministry could soon be a thing of the past.
But officials with Lee's transition team explained Monday that no decisions about the new government's setup will be released before next week.
