While bird flu has Asia on alert it's influenza season here in Korea.
With a growing number of patients showing symptoms of influenza local health authority have issued an influenza warning nationwide.
Jang Jiyun reports.
The holiday season is a time for joy and celebration‚ but it can also mean coughing‚ sneezing‚ aches and fever for those caught by the flu bug.
And as the number of patients reporting flu-like symptoms since mid-November has risen well past the epidemic mark of three per thousand people the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a flu warning.
The health warning urges those who may be at high risk of catching the influenza virus to get innoculated.
That includes people suffering from serious medical conditions‚ those over the age of 65‚ pregnant women‚ and children six to 23 months old.
Also targeted are those in high-risk jobs‚ such as doctors and those working at community welfare centers and on poultry or pig farms.
Since the flu is transmitted from person to person through droplets and small particles experts say the best way to prevent passing on the infection is by covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and frequently washing one's hands.
Although most of those hit by the flu recover within a week or two prolonged symptoms can develop into more serious conditions such as pneumonia and in extreme cases may even result in death.
The flu shot now being offered in clinics and hospitals across Korea immunizes people to the nasty bug.
And the disease prevention center says that susceptible citizens should not hesitate to take the extra precaution and get the shot.
