요약정보
Korea has been increasing its contributions to developing countries in recent years but it only decades ago that it was on the receiving end.
One organization behind this drive to help the needy worldwide is a non-governmental organization called Good Neighbors.
Chang Yeojeong tells us more about the group.
A little over half a century ago Korea was struggling to emerge from the ashes of the Korean War with the help of foreign aid.
Since that time Korea has transformed itself from aid recipient to aid donor.
And one engine behind this philanthropic push is a homegrown non-governmental organization known as Good Neighbors.
Since taking wing in 1991‚ it has been helping the needy in over 17 of the world's developing countries.
''Soon after hosting the 1988 Olympics‚ Korea joined the club of developed countries‚ the OECD. Since then‚ there was a need for a channel for sharing our experiences at overcoming the war and also repaying the aid we received. With this pure intention‚ Good Neighbors was launched by 128 people. And today‚ some 300 thousand people are taking part in this major fundraising campaign.''
Such a passion to give back has put Good Neighbors in the international spotlight.
It recently won a UN Millennium Development Goals Award for promoting primary education by supplying more than two thousand tons of paper to be used to make textbooks for North Korean children and running schools in countries such as Kenya and Pakistan.
The MDGs are a series of eight internationally agreed-upon goals to reduce global poverty‚ disease‚ and hunger by 2015.
''There are about three thousand NGOs registered at the United Nations. Among them‚ in the category of primary education‚ only two organizations were recognized for their efforts: Good Neighbors was one. We got to show on the global stage just how much Korean citizens have done for the world.''
On top of supporting education‚ Good Neighbors provides emergency relief in many parts of the globe and raises funds for the less fortunate at home and abroad.
And the NGO says that for this giving-culture to flourish the Korean government should overhaul its incentives system to encourage more individual and agency donors.
''NGOs like Good Neighbors say it is important for Korea to play an active role in helping developing countries since the country has a lot to share. That is‚ sharing know-how on achieving successful and fast economic development.
