This is the sound of the East.
At least that's what this group of friends has been in search of for years.
"'Sound of the East 2007' a relaunch of an earlier music series founded in 1999 presents accomplished musicians from Korea‚ China‚ Japan‚ and Taiwan. Their goal is to promote native Asian music to the rest of the world."
A US music director founded the Asian music concert with 12-hundred dollars from his own pocket.
The event had its ninth showing Wednesday in downtown Seoul where eight performances were given.
A member who joined this circle of musicians last year praised their efforts to find the sound of the East.
"After the whole 20th century music composition has been dominated by the Western world Europe and America. And now they all look to the East to look for their inspiration and also their ideas."
Their endeavor to capture the essence of Eastern sound does not always involve Eastern instruments.
"When I'm using this particular instrumentation I'm not thinking of Beethoven‚ Brahms or Ravel. I'm thinking of the Oriental sound so a lot of the fingerings and bowing and the sound effects I brought it from Chinese instrumental technique. There are a lot of gliding effect and tremolo effect. During the rehearsal‚ some of the Korean players also felt like Korean traditional music. So I think this is what we are looking for. We use piano‚ violin‚ but we are not writing Western music‚ we are writing music of our own sound‚ the sound of the East."
Holding this concert every year here in Seoul can raise doubts that the goal may be too ambitious.
Organizers say their vision is well founded.
"Realistically speaking‚ we have good conditions for our goal. There is a large performing stage called the Asian Culture Complex‚ down in Gwangju‚ that is under construction. The Korean government is also undertaking many projects to integrate Asian music. This concert which has been going on for a long time is naturally a part of such efforts. I do not think the vision is groundless."
With next year's event marking the 10th anniversary organizers and participants say their efforts will likely shine even more because Sound of the East is a get-together of friends who can represent each country's music.
