What does this trail run mean for the two Koreas?
The test runs were just a single-day event‚ and no one knows when or if they'll take place again.
But for Koreans‚ the long-awaited test runs hold great significance and meaning.
Some people here would like to believe that South and North Korea are a step closer to unification.
The magnitude of inter-Korean cooperation displayed across the inter-Korean border Thursday would have been unthinkable a decade ago.
It took nearly seven years for the test runs to happen after the two Koreas agreed to reconnect the Gyeongui and Donghae lines in 2000.
Getting North Korea to proceed with the trial runs was tougher than reconnecting the railroads.
The railroads are part of broader‚ joint inter-Korean economic cooperation‚ including flagship projects such as a joint industrial complex‚ and tours to the Mount Geumgang area in North Korea.
Naturally‚ we're hoping this will mean regular service in future. When can we expect that to happen?
More discussions between Seoul and Pyeongyang are needed not to mention the funds needed to get the train network up and running.
A determining factor in making the operations permanent is North Korea's security guarantee for the safe passage of trains.
But permanent guarantee aside‚ full operations could take years because of the time needed to renovate North Korea's dilapidated rail system.
Alright. Let's say the two railways are fully functional‚ what would be the ramifications?
If and when a trans-Korean railway is serviceable‚ the economic potential could be boundless.
South Korean Unification Minister Lee Jaejoung says there's already great demand for the two railways because of their logistical and transport potential thanks to an inter-Korean business complex near the border.
The Donghae Line on the east coast could become a key route for tourists going to North Korea's Mount Geumgang resort.
In addition‚ the linking of a trans-Korean railway to the trans-Siberian and trans-Chinese railways would turn the Korean Peninsula into a logistics hub of Northeast Asia.
Now there are skeptics who say this was a very expensive one-time event.
Yes‚ nearly 600 million US dollars has been poured into the project with most of it going toward renovating and relinking the two rail lines.
Seoul promised 80 million dollars worth of raw materials for light industries‚ and 400 thousand tons of rice before Pyeongyang gave the final greenlight for the trial runs.
One interesting note from Thursday's event is that in stark contrast to the celebratory atmosphere in South Korea‚ the mood in the North was toned down and minus all the fanfare.
Fanfare or not‚ this is a significant step forward and let's hope we'll see things pick up from here.
