We're into the second week of scorching temperatures in Korea‚ and residents here are bracing for more hot and humid conditions.
It may seem like summer's here to stay‚ but a peek at a traditional calendar shows autumn is on its way.
Eun Jung tells us what Koreans think about this age-old routine.
Tuesday marks the start of autumn‚ or "ipchu‚” according to the traditional solar calendar‚ observed by farmers across Asia.
But with the day's highs‚ ranging from 34 up to 37 degrees Celsius‚ does it really feel that way?
RECORDED: "We used to get some cooler breezes around "ipchu‚” but it seems the tropical night phenomenon is taking its toll this year."
RECORDED: "Because the weather is getting hotter‚ I get easily annoyed during the day. I don't remember it being so hot even during the height of summer."
RECORDED: "I keep my fan on all the time when I'm sleeping."
Amid hot and humid conditions‚ people are scrambling for shade‚ and the nearest water fountain.
But despite what the mercury reads‚ there are signs that autumn isn't too far off.
In the countryside‚ pumpkins and apples are ripe to be picked‚ and farmers are out in the rice paddies beginning the harvest.
"Ipchu" is part of the traditional Asian timetable that divides a year into 24 segments following the movement of the sun.
These served as important signals for the next phase in the agricultural cycle.
RECORDED: "The 24 seasonal markers‚ derived from the seasonal changes around China's Yellow River‚ do not exactly fit the conditions here in Korea. But the summer heat does usually subside around "ipchu." This year‚ we're experiencing belated heat after the monsoon. We expect such conditions to continue until mid-August."
"Even though "ipchu" hails the start of autumn‚ for many Koreans fighting with scorching temperatures day and night‚ the summer is still at its peak‚ with no end in sight anytime soon.
