Pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine had meant to shoot down a Russian airliner to give the Russian president a pretext for an invasion but shot down the Malaysian airliner Flight 17 instead.
That's what the head of Ukraine's secret service is claiming according to a Daily Mail report.
The official said that the fighters had mispositioned their BUK rocket launcher‚ as both villages had the same name.
Had they gone to the planned site‚ an Aeroflot flight headed to Cyprus from Moscow would have been hit according to the report.
