At Vatican City Pope Francis said he envisions "a poor church for the poor".
He made the remarks to the media after he was elected leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.
Wearing simple white robes and plain black shoes‚ he explained how he decided to name himself after St. Francis of Assisi.
He said after he was elected by more than two-thirds of the vote in the conclave‚ a fellow cardinal embraced him and said‚ "Don't forget the poor."
He said that's when he thought of Francis of Assisi‚ well known as a man of poverty and of peace.
There were some 5‚600 accredited journalists who attended the new pope's first meeting with the global media.
