[Reporter : ] After conducting decades of extensive research on the walking speed of the elderly‚ a team of scientists in the US has discovered that the tendency to walk faster equates to healthier physical conditions.
One may want to try and make a habit of picking up the speed when walking.
A study by a team of researcher from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center led by Dr. Stephanie Studenski showed that walking speed among senior citizens is associated with their life expectancy.
The data was compiled thanks to the cooperation of 35 thousand adults aged 65 and above.
The team evaluated individual walking speeds‚ which were analyzed along with a variety of health factors.
Some participants were studied for almost 20 years.
The average gait speed was point-9 meters per second.
Those who walk faster than this speed tended to live longer than average.
The reason for this is simple.
Walking speed is a very straightforward reflection of the conditions of one's the respiratory‚ skeletal or muscular system.
Over in Athens‚ Greece‚ a fierce clash broke out between residents and police in a dispute over a local landfill site.
Under a European Union directive‚ Greece was required to close all illegal landfills by the end of 2010 or face heavy fines.
A new landfill site was supposed to replace three illegal dumps that exist in the area.
With riot police blocking the road‚ even a priest and residents who were headed to a lake where a traditional Epiphany ceremony takes place each year could not pass.
Locals who oppose to the new garbage dump have been standing guard on the entrance to the landfill site and battling it out with the police for several weeks now.
According to the CEO of Gulf Craft‚ the biggest Gulf Arab yacht maker‚ modest sales growth is expected for 2011.
And why not‚ since a 40 percent increase was recorded last year.
Although the global financial crisis and domestic disasters led Gulf Craft to fear for the worst‚ clients who had plans to buy the best luxury goods the company has to offer before such crisis occurred went on with their plans.
Around half of Gulf Craft's customers comprise of members of the region's ruling families‚ celebrities and successful businessman.
The company's more affordable lineup includes fishing boats costing around 13 thousand US dollars while their most luxurious product is a yacht with a hefty price tag of around 16 million dollars.
