The two leaders of China and Russia held talks on Monday in Beijing to solidify their strategic partnership in the energy sector.
Celebrating the partial completion of an East Siberian-Pacific Ocean oil pipeline project‚ in which Russia will supply 15 million tons of oil to China from 2011 to 2030‚ Medvedev pinned down further deals with China‚ including expanded cooperation in coal‚ natural gas‚ nuclear and renewable energy in efforts to boost Russia's resource-reliant economy.
Russia is currently the world's biggest energy producer while China edged out the US last year to become the largest energy consumer.
The old allies also pledged strategic cooperation in international and regional affairs reportedly touching on several geopolitical issues‚ including security matters surrounding the Korean peninsula.
[Interview : ] "We discussed international issues and in this framework‚ Russia and China are maintaining their choice of a strategic partnership‚ strategic joint action on all issues. This helps our countries adapt more easily to the geopolitical changes which are continually taking place."
Following the talks‚ Russia's foreign minister‚ Sergey Lavrov‚ who is accompanying Medvedev told reporters that China and Russia share common interests in maintaining the stability of the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia.
He also gave a positive outlook on the strained inter-Korean relationships saying that progress is likely to be made in the near future‚ including the resumption of the long-stalled six-party nuclear talks.
Medvedev is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier‚ Wen Jiabao‚ top legislator‚ Wu Bangguo and Vice President Xi Jinping before visiting Shanghai's World Expo to wrap up his three-day visit on Tuesday.
