Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have agreed to merge in a stock-swap deal worth THREE.SIX billion US dollars that will create the world's SINGLE largest carrier in terms of traffic.
Delta says the combined airline will keep its name‚ its Atlanta headquarters and Delta CEO Richard Anderson.
The consolidation of America's THIRD and FIFTH-biggest airlines will result in a combined annual revenue of more than THIRTY billion dollars‚ employing SEVENTY FIVE-thousand workers.
The two airlines aim to close the deal by the end of the year during which time they must win approval from labor unions‚ shareholders and antitrust regulators.
The merger is expected to trigger similar moves by other carriers‚ struggling with rising oil prices.
