The deadly bird flu virus is spreading like wildfire‚ across Europe and other regions.
European countries that have confirmed their first cases of the disease are reporting new infections.
The latest country to be affected by the virus is Albania.
Nam Ki-yung has more.
France‚ Germany‚ Sweden‚ now the H5N1 strain of the avian influenza has been detected in one of the Balkan States.
The Albanian agriculture ministry has confirmed its first case of the deadly virus‚ after lab tests on chicken proved they were infected with the H5N1 strain of bird flu.
The contaminated birds were discovered two weeks ago at a farm in Cukes‚ a coastal town near Albania's border with Greece.
Samples collected from the farm had been sent to a research center in Britain.
Albanian health officials have put the village under quarantine and will conduct tests on fowl found near the area.
Sweden‚ meanwhile‚ has discovered four new cases of the highly pathogenic virus this week‚ and is expecting additional test results following its first outbreak last month.
Germany is also reeling from the pandemic that has been detected in wild birds and even in a dead cat.
Poland‚ which reported its first bird flu case from infected swans on Sunday‚ is scrambling to contain the spread of the airborne virus.
So far‚ the World Health Organization says there's no known reports of human-to-human transmission‚ but is concerned that the virus may mutate.
The disease has spread to more than 30 countries‚ and killed at least 96 people since it broke out in 2003.
