In Turkey‚ a 12-year-old girl has died‚ becoming the latest victim of bird flu.
Although she initially tested negative for the H5N1 virus‚ authorities say she came to the hospital too late.
Health officials are investigating the case‚ to determine if the avian influenza virus is mutating.
Park Jong-hong reports.
Turkish health officials on Sunday announced a 5-year-old boy had tested positive to the deadly bird flu strain‚ bringing the number of infected people in Turkey to 19.
The boy and his 12-year-old sister‚ who died earlier Sunday‚ had contact with sick birds.
But preliminary tests showed his sister tested negative for the H5N1 virus.
The children were from the nearby town of Dogubayazit‚ also the hometown of three other children who died of bird flu last week.
The head physician at the Van 100th Year Hospital said the girl might have died because she was hospitalized too late.
RECORDED: "She applied to our center five days after her symptoms began.
Too late yes‚ definitely too late. All of the cases we lost‚ four of them we lose. They were all late to medicate."
Many say the difficulty of early treatment is compounded because early symptoms of infection‚ like fever‚ coughing and sore throat‚ mimic those of common flu.
Health officials said all of the people confirmed with bird flu apparently had touched or played with birds and that there was no evidence of person-to-person infection.
The World Health Organization is examining the cases closely as it tracks how the virus may be changing.
