요약정보
Just last week‚ Pyeongchang the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics‚ welcomed some very special athletes who came to practice and hone their skills before the Special Olympics set to take place next year.
And we have Song Ji-sun in the studio to tell us more.
So‚ Ji-sun‚ you've already been to Pyeonchang several times this season both to report about skiing and snowboarding but I heard that this time‚ you went there not to cover about an elite competition.
[Reporter : Song Ji-sun
song@arirangtv.com] Yes‚ indeed.
It was also my first time visiting the alpine city without a pair of skis or a snowboard because it was a very different stage this time.
But it definitely was the most impressive‚ exciting and moving experience out of all the winter sporting events I've been to so far.
I'll tell you why.
Figure skaters dressed in brilliant costumes are waiting for their turns to practice before performing their program.
[Interview : Chien Shi Hyu‚ Taiwanese participant] "I've prepared something very‚ very beautiful and graceful.
And my costume is pretty too."
"Let's go‚ Taiwan!!"
These athletes flew from Taipei to take part in the Pre-Games for the 2013 Pyeongchang Special Olympics.
[Reporter : Song Ji-sun
song@arirang.co.kr] "It does not take landing a triple axel to be on the ice here because each and every stroke means just as much for these skaters."
[Interview : Koh Sung-Hee‚ Figure skating coach] "It's not about skills or techniques for these kids.
What's important is that the children enjoy skating itself and it's very fulfilling seeing them feel more confident about themselves after achieving their goals."
The scenes on the snow are not too different from those on the ice.
They may fall down‚ crash‚ or even drift outside the lines but they get right back up and take another turn to complete the race.
[Interview : Kim Dae-kyu‚ Korean participant] "I just finished my race in fourth place‚ and it was very fun!
I want to race again."
The Special Olympics differ from the Paralympic Games because it is a non-elite event for the intellectually challenged‚ such as those with autism or Down syndrome while the Paralympics are a competitive event for the physically challenged.
But the spirit is alive and well among these athletes -- regardless of their mental or physical state.
[Interview : Mun Chang-hyeon‚ Korean participant] "I could've raced faster‚ but I'll definitely do better the next time."
Turns out his dash was more than enough to put him on the podium.
[Interview : Mun Chang-hyeon‚ Korean participant] "I'm so happy that I won. I think I won because I did not fall down."
Even if they don't make it to the podium‚ all participants are awarded with ribbons as the Special Games applauds their accomplishments and efforts.
And hundreds of volunteers who made this event possible are grateful that they took part too.
[Interview : Kang Jong-seong‚ Volunteer] "I hadn't get a chance to get to know these kids with disabilities before.
They are actually very upbeat and playful‚ and I feel more connected to them now."
The parents say that it wasn't easy to get a head on in the beginning neither on the ice or snow.
[Interview : Ryu Hee-soo‚ Mother of a participant] "It was difficult just to get a chance to practice‚ because we were often rejected in many sporting facilities.
So we had to organize our own group to get lessons in the ice rink."
But it was worth all the tears and sweats of lacing the boots.
[Interview : Ryu Hee-soo‚ Mother of a participant] "Sports is definitely something all children with intellectual disabilities should try out.
It improves their social and learning skills noticeably and I've come to learn that there is something my son is really good at."
It seems like we will be seeing their faces again right here next ye
