The Ladies' Professional Golf Association draws the world's best female golfers.
Ever since Korean-born Park Se-ri emerged victorious at the U.S. Open in 1998‚ Korean players have taken over the LPGA.
Currently‚ 32% of the LPGA players are Korean. When Korean-Americans are added‚ that proportion rises to 40%.

The increasing influence of Korean players in each tournament drew the attention of the LPGA‚ which began to take note of the players' native peninsular country. This eventually led the LPGA to plan an event having to do with Korea.
The LPGA players themselves also became more enthusiastic about Korea. Among them stands out Maria Jose Uribe‚ also known as Mariajo [ma-ree-ah-ho].

Mariajo is talented player who took home the LPGA Tour HSBC Brazil Cup. Although it was an unofficial event‚ Uribe drew the interest of golf watchers everywhere.
Mariajo is in New Jersey for an LPGA competition.

Instead of practicing on the field‚ she is inside studying Korean! She is eager to show her Korean counterparts her skills.

Mariajo first heard about Korea from her Korean roommate at UCLA. As she made more Korean friends through the LPGA‚ she decided to learn the language.
She began her studies three months ago‚ and is having a lot of fun.

I think it’s great that a lot of players are bonding. A lot of players are willing to learn Korean to being able to communicate with other Koreans. I think that’s a great idea. "
The LPGA operates a "Language Training Center" for players like Mariajo. At every tournament‚ the players can receive 1:1 training in the host country's language.
It's been a while since Mariajo's seen her teacher. These days‚ they're focusing on pronunciation.

It's the day of a tournament.
As in any other professional tournament‚ the players are focused on giving their best. One can only imagine the pressure they must feel.
After the first day‚ Mariajo is looking at something with a fellow golfer.
They're watching a Korean TV drama! This is the golfers' way of relieving tension.
