Thank you for being with us on World Sports‚ I'm Kim Young.
Its the dead middle of summer and figure skating might be the last thing on your mind but the Kim Yu-na fever continues.
In honor of Kim Yu-na's visit to Los Angeles‚ the City of Angeles designated August 7th as Kim Yu-na Day.
The resolution of "Yuna's Day" was submitted to the Council by Councilman Herb J Wesson Jr‚ who represents the 10th district which includes Korea Town and Councilman Tom Labonge
Councilman Wesson explained that Olympic gold medalist and a global star Kim Yu-na‚ can become a role model not only to second generation Korean Americans but also to other communities.
The Council voted unanimously for the declaration and the seventh day of August will now be know as "Yuna's Day"
On this day‚ the Korean community‚ with the support of the city of Los Angeles will have events honoring the figure skater on that day every year.
Jin Jong-oh won the bronze medal at the 50th World Shooting Championship in Munich‚ Germany‚ earning the right to compete at the 2012 London Olympics.
In the 10 meter individual air pistol competition‚ Jin triggered his way to 689.1 points total and third place.
Lee Dae-myung and Han Seung-woo also won the bronze in the team competition while Kim Ji-hye‚ Kim Sun-ah and Kim Jang-mi won the silver in the junior team competition.
The U-20 women's national team returned to Korea after a first-ever third place finish at a FIFA sanctioned tournament.
The team returned to a hero's welcome after a successful run in Germany.
Head coach Choi In-chul who led the U-20 team is now a prime candidate for the women's "A" national team who will be playing in the Peace Cup and the Asian Games.
Disgraced American sprinter Justin Gatlin made a successful return to competition on following his four-year ban for drug use.
The 28-year-old‚ who won Olympic gold in the 100 meters in 2004 and two world titles the following year‚ made his comeback at an athletics meet in Eastern Europe.
He was the fastest in the 100m heats with a time of 10.34 seconds‚ qualifying ahead of his compatriots J-Mee Samuels and Rubin Williams in Estonia.
Gatlin who had tested positive for excessive levels of testosterone in April 2006‚ equaled Asafa Powell's former world record of 9.77 in May 2006‚ but this was later wiped from the books.
After the most undisciplined match of the tournament in South Africa FIFA‚ hit the Dutch federation with a $14‚480 fine and Spain was ordered to pay $9‚650 after five of its players were cautioned.
The fines were levied under Article 52 of FIFA’s disciplinary code‚ which allows for a federation to be fined when at least five of its players are issued yellow cards.
The Dutch committed 28 fouls and the Spanish 19 for a total of 47 fouls.
The fines are pretty insignificant considering the Netherlands received $24 million as runner-up and Spain won $30 million in prize money as the World Cup champion.
The 8th Gay Games have begun in Cologne‚ the unofficial gay capital of Germany.
The Gay Games were founded in 1981 and takes place every four years‚ just like the Olympic Games and lasts for eight days.
The brainchild of Dr. Tom Waddell‚ a 1968 Olympics decathlon competitor the Gay Games is a a place where all lesbian‚ gay‚ bisexual‚ and transgender athletes could show their equality to the world through their skills and competitive spirit‚ and hopefully promote a better understanding through sport.
And that is all for tonight.
Thank you for watching‚ good night.
