Apple scored a win against the U.S. government which has been pressing the smartphone maker to breach the iPhone's security system to extract data. Bruce‚ how does this ruling impact Apple's bigger fight for privacy? So what happened is a U.S. federal judge in New York ruled he does not have the authority to order Apple to disable the security of an iPhone seized during a drug investigation. This fuels Apple's argument that it doesn't have to help the Justice Deparment retrieve data off an iPhone from one of the shooters in the San Bernardino terror attack late last year or help retrieve data in other cases. Before October‚ when Apple went to court over the drug case‚ it had always complied with the government's requests -- some 70 cases. But since then‚ it's reportedly denied the government's requests for at least 12 devices. In the California shooting‚ the Justice Department argues obtaining the data on the shooter's phone is an issue of national security. Bruce‚ this is an issue that popped up on the campaign trail recently. So depending on who becomes president may ultimately influence the outcome of these cases.
