U.S. pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson has lost a second lawsuit to defendants who claim its products cause cancer. Bruce Harrison joins me now in the studio. Bruce‚ tell us about the court's decision. Connyoung‚ a court in Missouri ordered Johnson and Johnson to pay the defendant 55-MILLION U.S. dollars. The defendant says she used the company's talc products for feminine hygiene for decades and that's how she got ovarian cancer. The court ruled Johnson & Johnson didn't provide enough warning about the products' cancer risks. Bruce‚ in addition to these cases more than one-THOUSAND lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson over it's talc products. What kind of threat does the latest ruling present for the company? This second blow to Johnson & Johnson‚ after a 72-MILLION award it was ordered to pay out in February‚ really enhances the threat of all those pending suits. So far‚ research into a link between the talc products and ovarian cancer has shown mixed results. But a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs told the Wall Street Journal that documents dating back to the 1970s show the company was concerned about a link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder. Johnson and Johnson plans to appeal the latest ruling. A spokeswoman for the company said the verdict contradicts 30 years of research backing the safety of its cosmetic talc.
