요약정보
Up until now‚ the only way for a regular computer user in Korea to know an image had not been faked or altered was by checking whether it was the original file.
It's especially difficult given the advancements made in image modification programs like Photoshop in recent years.
But now‚ thanks to a team of Korean researchers‚ ordinary people are able to verify the authenticity of a photo by simply uploading it onto a website.
(Korean‚ )
"We created our website by meshing together a number of programs that are designed to detect changes made from the original file and decipher what type of alterations were done."
The research team developed the software from an idea that modification of a digital image changes the inner statistical characteristics‚ which allows users to detect the type and extent of alteration methods applied.
The development is expected to be applicable in various fields like law‚ medicine and the military where it's critical to verify the authenticity of an image.
They hope the technology will help cut down on the falsification of important documents like dissertations‚ medical images or legal evidence.
The researchers' forensic digital image website can be found at 'forensic.kaist.ac.kr.'
By sharing the software‚ the researchers hope to open a new chapter for counterfeit detection technology and establish a stronger social safety net in the country.
