요약정보
In this new classroom for the digital age‚ paper and pens are a thing of the past.
In their place are cutting-edge devices such as personal computing tablets that allow unparalleled connectivity between students and teachers‚ such as video conferencing.
Here a network technology called cloud computing allows teachers to instantly send e-books‚ videos‚ and notes to students‚ while ensuring they never lose their homework.
[Interview : Jung Seung-hwan‚ 6th Grader
] "Now that we're using computers for everything‚ it's a lot easier. Being able to share things with friends is easier‚ and it's more fun seeing a presentation being projected onto the screen."
Educators and school officials hope that this tech-savvy generation will quickly latch on to the digital classrooms‚ while at the same time making for a more productive learning environment.
[Interview : Yu Dong-uk‚ Elementary School Teacher] "Whether it's for collaborative learning‚ greater communication is made possible. There's a diversity of activities that students can share with each other. Classroom media can also be extended [to all students quickly]."
Recently‚ this Smart Education Learning Hub was opened at a school in Daegu as a model for the country's future education system.
Korea's Ministry of Education‚ Science‚ and Technology is betting big on its "Smart Education" initiative with plans to fully introduce digital textbooks as a standard for elementary‚ middle‚ and high schools by 2015.
However‚ these new gadgets won't come cheap.
As Korea's biggest cloud-networking project‚ the national costs are expected to surpass 2.3 billion U.S. dollars‚ with 500 million dollars alone dedicated to the development of digital books and content.
[Interview : Woo Dong-gi‚ Superintendent
Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education ] "Through the start of educational instructor training‚ it's expected that a variety of teaching methods will be developed where teachers‚ students‚ and parents can all participate."
The goal of the smart learning project is to take advantage of modern technology to provide better learning and teaching methods‚ but only time will tell if this trend will truly benefit tomorrow's students rather than end up merely as a gimmick.
