It is my great pleasure to be here to celebrate together the 65th anniversary of the National Day of the People's Republic of China. On the occasion of his visit to Korea in July‚ President Xi Jinping mentioned that he felt like he was visiting a relative. Today‚ I have the same feeling of familiarity‚ as if I were coming to a birthday party of a very close family member.
Since its adoption of the policies of reform and opening up‚ the People's Republic of China -- through concerted efforts by its government and the people -- has achieved astonishing developments. Building upon this‚ it is now moving forward towards the goal of realizing the "Chinese Dream‚" under the guidance of President Xi Jinping's leadership. There is a great hope that such solid development in China will make constructive contributions not only to the promotion of the welfare of its people but indeed to the peace and prosperity of the international community.
Ladies and Gentlemen‚
Since our diplomatic normalization‚ our two countries have created remarkable progress. This trend of ever-deepening relations has gained fresh momentum since early last year when new administrations were launched in both countries.
Korea and China‚ through the exchange of visits by the leaders of both countries‚ have laid out a blueprint that will enrich the Korea-China Strategic Cooperative Partnership in the coming 20 years.
Based on this blueprint‚ the bilateral relations are currently transforming into a whole new level of relationship that is unprecedented in the past. Indeed‚ as our exchanges and cooperation in not only the economic but also the political and security fields mature both qualitatively and quantitatively‚ our relationship is increasingly becoming one that fully reflects the expression of "hot politics and hot economics"‚ which means that our relations are vibrant in both economic and political fields. The trade volume between the two countries is soon expected to surpass $300 billion‚ and the level of people-to-people exchanges will soon reach 10 million persons a year.
Ladies and Gentlemen‚
The Chinese philosopher Lao-Tzu (Laozi) once said: "合抱之木 生於毫末 九層之臺 起於累土." That is‚ every giant tree comes from a sapling the size of a hair‚ and a nine-story tower begins with only a fistful of soil on the ground.
Twenty-two years ago‚ Korea-China relation began as a small sapling‚ but has now fully grown into a big tree. This growth has been achieved thanks to the interest‚ care‚ and efforts of the governments and people of the two countries. And it is my sincere hope that such efforts do indeed continue so that the big tree continue to grow in a whole range of areas‚ eventually forming a dense forest. That‚ I believe‚ is when the "Chinese Dream" and the "Korean Dream" can concur and together lead to a more profound form of development in what President Park Geun-hye has referred to as the "Northeast Asian Dream".
I would like to offer my congratulations once again on the 65th anniversary of the National Day of the People's Republic of China‚ and I would like to propose a toast to a prosperous China and the continued development of a thriving Korea-China relations.
