The talk of the town in the film industry these days is by far Myeongnyang‚ or "Roaring Currents".
A number of factors are said to have helped pave the way for the movie's unprecedented success.
Our film critic Pierce Conran joins me in the studio to share his views.
Pierce‚ ROARING CURRENTS started setting records last week where does it currently stand?
Indeed it set an opening day record last Wednesday and has pretty much destroyed every imaginable record since then. It has set new daily highs for every day of the week save for Thursday‚ broke the opening weekend by a whopping 41% (with 3.35 million viewers)‚ and has made new benchmarks for 3‚4‚5‚6‚7‚8 and 9 day totals‚ in addition to being the fastest film to reach 2‚3‚4‚5‚6‚7 and 8 million spectators. The list goes on as it became the first film to cross 1 million admissions in a single day on Saturday and went on to improve on that on Sunday‚ when it reached 1.25 million viewers‚ which was also the first time a film has crossed KRW 10 billion in a single day.
So at this point‚ is it safe to say that it's rewriting the record book? It is certainly bearing down on the all-time record holder‚ the Avatar.
It's taken the record book‚ set fire to it and tossed in the trash. What's remarkable is that the film was able to improve on previous records by such a wide margin. The industry has been improving in recent years but the number of screens has remained around the same‚ personally I felt that previous scores were relatively close to saturation point. Of course‚ that also points to some unique factors in the Korean industry that have implications that are not so positive.
Not so positive as in (big film makers owning theaters?)
That's exactly right. Korea has what is called a vertically integrated film industry. This means that the majors produce the big commercial films‚ distribute them and also exhibit them‚ which effectively grants them near monopolies against less well-equipped competitors. The companies I'm referring to are CJ (which owns CGV) and Lotte Entertainment (which owns Lotte Cinemas). There's also Showbox‚ which used to be affiliated with Megabox. They're no longer the same company but I imagine they still have a mutually beneficial relationship. ROARING CURRENTS is a CJ title‚ and is of course prominently featured in CGV locations‚ having reached as many as 8000 screenings a day over the weekend.
That must have also been a factor. Is that the only factor though in your opinion?
To be honest‚ ahead of its debut I thought it would do well but not be a breakout hit‚ as the film seemed a little too male-centric. Of course‚ I couldn't have been more off base and in retrospect the reason for its success seems very clear. Admiral Yi Sun-shin (the main character of the film) is a legend in Korea and everyone has learned about him in school. But what really made it work is that after the Sewol Disaster‚ the mood in Korea has been quite low‚ people are still very sad and ashamed of what happened. ROARING CURRENTS shows a proud moment of Korean history and viewers were eager for something of that caliber to make them feel good again.
How are other movies faring against roaring currents?
It has effectively wiped out the competition. KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT had a big debut a week before but dropped a huge 75% when ROARING CURRENTS came out. Now THE PIRATES is suffering greatly after opening at roughly 1/3 of ROARING CURRENTS' start. Though with three back-to-back period blockbusters‚ there were always going to be some casualties. That said‚ combined with the rest of the films out there‚ last weekend most the most well-attended frame on record‚ as 5 million viewers went to theaters.
