요약정보
Those who live in Seoul are no strangers to jam-packed roads tall buildings and crowded streets.
But at this photograph exhibition "The Time of Seoul" held to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Korea visitors can get a glimpse of a very different Seoul that of the 1950s.
The pictures were taken by late photographer Lim Inshik.
His career got an extra boost when he worked as a war photographer during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
After living a life devoted to photography Lim died in 1998.
[Reporter : 기자: 장소이] "The late photographer is back to take us on a journey into the past and show us the Seoul he lived in some 60 years ago."
Lim was the first Korean to take pictures from the sky.
The Gwanghwamun area in downtown Seoul is now full of skycrapers and modern buildings.
Right after the Korean War when this picture was taken there were only low-rise buildings.
And the statue of Lee Sunshin was nowhere to be seen back then.
Jongno Tower was where Korea's first modern department store Hwashin was located.
But the popular place to shop in the 1950s was Namdaemun Market which was even more crowded then than it is now.
And take a look at what they sold at this makeshift diner near the Cheonggye Stream.
The street sign reads snakes and moles.
[Interview : Youn Suae‚ Seoul resident] "I remember two floodings when I was young‚ just like in this picture. The trees‚ and the train‚ everything in the pictures is just as I remember."
But above all Lim's favorite model for his photographs was his loving family.
[Interview : Lim Chungeui‚ Son of Lim Inshik] "I didn't think much of it when my father took pictures of my family back then‚ but now I realize the historical value of his works."
Nowadays with advanced digital cameras and programs like Photoshop we live in a sea of photographs that are some of the time fabricated.
But late Lim Inshik's pictures tell us that in photography it matters to be genuine.
The exhibition runs from December 16th to February 2nd at the National Palace Museum of Korea and admission is free.
