요약정보
We now take you to an annual jazz festival under way this weekend on a small island that has recently emerged as the new cultural venue in Seoul's suburban area.
The festival offers visitors not only the ear-pleasing sound of jazz‚ but also a host of other non-musical activities such as painting contests and pottery.
Our Kang Chery was there to bring you this report.
'Turtle Island' turned a treasure island.
Jarasum‚ or Turtle Island in Korean‚ is holding the fourth Jarasum International Jazz Festival 2007 in Gapyeong‚ Gyeonggi Province.
About two-hundred musicians are to perform during this festival scheduled from September 12 to Sunday.
Ever since the first festival in 2004‚ the event has evolved into a full-fledged jazz festival.
''More than 100-thousand visitors graced the four-day event last year.
The organizers say they have enhanced their approach in various aspects to promote this festival as an attraction for tourists and families.
And this year‚ 150- thousand visitors are expected with one day of extension.''
Under the theme of nature‚ family‚ relaxation‚ and music‚ the festival excites many Korean and foreign jazz fans with performances by world-famous jazz musicians.
However‚ this festival means much more than a simple jazz festival.
Visitors can experience various cultural programs such as exhibitions‚ pottery‚ face painting‚ wood craft‚ and children's painting contests.
The jazz festival doesn't limit itself to jazz only.
13 foreign teams and around 20 Korean teams‚ in addition to 16 amateur teams are scheduled to feature various genres‚ including R&B‚ soul‚ and hiphop as well.
One musician says there are two kinds of music‚ good and bad and there is no reason to be exclusive in a festival.
''I think people actually like good music. So I trust the audience that they make their own opinion of the music. And I think it's a good thing to mix styles so that the audience of hiphop has the chance to meet jazz on stage and the other side also. I think it's a smart way to make things just to open it.''
And as a part of so-called 'Buk-Han River Renaissance Project' aimed at boosting the economy of the upper Han River region‚ this festival is not only about appreciating music but also has a lot to do with boosting revenues.
''As the festival gains attention and popularity‚ I believe it does play a role in boosting the region's economy. As Gapyeong becomes known‚ more tourists are visiting and that vitalizes the economy.''
As the festival aims at becoming a hub jazz festival and the best one in Korea‚ the organizer adds the first Jarasum International Jazz Concours was held to nurture potential young jazz musicians as well.
